SKS Cultural Academy, the Chennai chapter of Sainadha Kala Samithi (an institute registered in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh for Indian classical dance) commenced its Kuchipudi dance classes on October 19 at Abiramapuram in Chennai. Guru Dr. Arun Saikumar started this institute in 1990 at Visakhapatnam. Till date he has trained over 3500 students in the Kuchipudi. The institute has 8 branches in Visakhapatnam, a branch at Warangal, Chennai, Pune and one in Vietnam. Soundarya Vaishnovi, a senior student of the guru, a banker turned dance teacher is handling the classes at Abiramapuram. Nadasangamam, the music wing of Narada Gana Sabha Trust in Chennai is organising its annual Carnatic music workshop at Thennangur village, outside Chennai from Feb. 7 to 9. This is a residential camp. Interactive and lecture sessions will be conducted by senior artistes. Suguna Varadachari will teach songs of Gopalakrishna Bharati while Baby Sreeram will focus on compositions of M. D. Ramanathan. Dr. R. S. Jayalakshmi, Sikkil Gurucharan and Sumithra Vasudev will focus on 'manodharma' in music. There will also be kolam design demonstration and guided kolam practicals by Gayatri Shankaranarayan at the Panduranga temple here. The last date for registration for this camp is Jan. 31.
