Laya in music; workshop in Chennai

A trust run by Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi and Lalgudi GJR Krishnan, violinists is hosting its annual event on the 15th and 16th of August in Chennai. KRUTAGNYA, a non profit organisation was started last year with a two-day long workshop on 'Laya in Carnatic music'. Many music students participated and benefitted out of this free workshop, says a note from the Trust. This year it is having a follow up workshop on the same topic - Layam. Dance workshop in Mangalore

Manthana is a dance festival held in the coastal town of Mangalore in Karnataka which features young talent. The second edition of the fest will be held on Oct.30 at the Don Bosco Hall, Mangalore. The fest is hosted by the Nrityaangan Trust promoted by Bharatanatyam dancer Radhika Shetty who is a performer based here and also a teacher with an academy. Raman Shankar from Mumbai is a renowed exponent of Marathi Abhangs and Hindi Bhajans. A disciple of late Mohan Rao Pai and brother of Mumbai Ganesh kumar, he has composed various Marathi Abhangs and trains several artistes in Mumbai. In Chennai, Raman Shankar will conduct a  wokshop which will provide valuable insights on Abhangs and demonstrate a few famous compositions. Carnatic music workshop; Mangalore

This summer, a workshop in Carnatic music and in Hindustani music ( vocal) is to be held in Mangalore, Karnataka. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Mani Krishnaswami Academy joins hands to organise this workshop. It is on for five days from May 9. Prarthana Sai Narasimhan and Basti Kavitha Shenoy will be the resource persons here. Sai Narasimhan will teach Carnatic vocal and Kavitha Shenoy, a Hindustani vocalist, will teach Marathi abhangs and bhajans.  The last date to register is April 20.
