Posted here are short notes on two recent Lec-Dems. One by Prof S R Janakiraman on Dec.22 at Music Academy and the other by R.K. Srikantan on Dec.23 at Narada Gana Sabha..
Srikantan along with his son Ramakanth spoke on the compositions of Jayachamaraja Udayar. Alongside, were R K Sriramkumar on violin and Manoj Shiva on mridangam.
Srikantan sang a few Jayachamaraja Udaiyar compositions in ragas Saraswati, Nattai, Bhavapriya, Dharmavathy, Sudha Danyasi, Lalitha, Kokilapriya and Mondu. All the compositions were in Sanskrit and so Srikantan gave brief introduction and also announced the thalam to which they are set.
N V Subramaniam of Saraswati Trust who spoke at this meet said that the purity of the voices of vidwans like Srikantan reflect the purity of the soul and that their music must be treated as archive material for posterity.
The Lec-dem on Dec. 22 at Music Academy by S R Janakiraman was on the Ragas Narayana Goula and Kannada Goula.
He presented an Ada Thala Varnam in Narayana Goula along with his disciple, singing only the swaras first. The swaras in a continuous stream went for 5 minutes nonstop. Then he sang the thanam for the same swaras, as it was a thana varnam, and his disciple the same swaras again, together for another 5 minutes.
The packed audience, including the stalwarts and expert committee members were spell bound. The mastery, scholarly skills and authority with which the piece was demonstrated spoke volumes about this living legend. (It is said that Narayana Goula is a tricky raga, that one small slip will lead to disaster!)
Then he sang kritis of Thyagaiah and Dikshithar in the same raga. He demonstrated Kannada Goula, again singing the compositions of both Thyagaiah and Dikshithar.
