The head of ABHAI (Association of Bharatnatyam Artistes), guru Chitra Visweswaran has made a public statement following the buzz on the decision of some dancers to skip the December Season fest.
She says - To perform or not to perform this season is each dancer's personal decision. ABHAI has not taken any stance as a collective body, nor is it imposing its views on anyone.
My institution CAPA has pulled out of all seasons performances...my students were given full freedom regarding their solos & they have personally decided to opt out, as have other youngsters. We are all deeply into relief work as are others...we will go on to throw ourselves into the rehab work of the artistes & the art related community..the musicians, instrument makers, the technicians, the tailors, the make up people...so many of our own who have been devastated. ABHAI will stand together in that effort.
The take on the season's performances is, however strictly personal.
I would also like to clarify that ABHAI did not ask for cancellation of season, just requested a postponement. The sabhas , however decided to go ahead...that is their prerogative. .We respect their viewpoint even as, I am sure, they do ours.
There is unnecessary controversy brewing which should be ended...as I always say, each one to their own. ABHAI is totally focussing on raising funds for supporting artistes & the art related community.
