Kalakshetra opened its Rukmini Arangham to a dance recital on Sunday evening - Dec.20 - and for rasikas who may have been a tad disappointed that its own festival has been postponed due to the deluge in the city, the recital was welcome - more so for Kalakshetra's students.
Water is still seen in puddles in some low-lying areas here but the campus has not been badly affected.
This was an evening of abhinaya. By senior dancer and guru Bragha Bessell. She showcases all that she learnt from Adyar K. Lakshman and Kalanidhi Narayanan, her main gurus.
The themed concert, 'Vinara', conceptualised by writer-curator Sujatha Vijayaraghavan and music composed by Kaniyal Hariprasad broadly fringed on 'listening'. And the space to be heard in a cacophonic world.
The team had taken excerpts from verses and music of a string of poets and composers - stories for children and on Krishna, Hanuman and Ravana - stories which allowed Bragha all the space and time for abhinaya.
The Arangham is a great space for performances. Bessell made good use of it and her recital got a huge round of applause.
