Music fest in Nanganallur

25 artistes are to be decorated with awards to mark the 25th anniversary of Valayapatti Kaashyap Naadhalaya at the launch of its annual December Season music festival at a venue in Nanganallur, Chennai. Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi swami of the Kanchi Mutt was the chief guest.
The local Guruvayoorappan Asthiga Samajam is a co-host of this event.
Nanganallur, located in the south side of what used to be subuurban Chennai and which some call Mylapore's cousin is now a sprawling neighbourhood; it was waking up to the evening rush-hour when the Kanchi Mutt swami's caravan rolled into an inner street where the temple dedicated to Sri Ayyappa is located; a large number of people were at hand to greet him even as nagaswaram-tavil artistes set the tone for the launch of the music fest at an adjoining hall.
The hall was packed with over 500 people, many keen to listen to the Kanchi Mutt swami speak on the occasion.
And his was a long speech, touching on India's heritage, culture and spiritualism, touching on the role of classical music and need to preserve India's classical arts.
These were the artistes who were honoured on Day One - Bombay Jayashri, Lalgudi G. J. R. Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, Neyveli Santhagopalan, Ghatam V. Suresh, nagaswaram artistes Mannargudi M. S. K. Sankaranarayanan and Mannargudi M. S. K. Venkatesan, C. S. Sanjeev, flutist R. Thyagarajan, Kongampattu A. V. Murugaiyan and Thiruvarur Vaidyanathan. (Selva Ganesh could not be present to receive his award)
The formal awards ceremony was followed by a namasankeerthanam recital by Udayalur Kalyanaraman.
Other senior artistes are to be awarded during the course of this nine-day fest.
Two concerts are held here every evening and among the top artistes listed are Vijay Siva and S. Sowmya.
The host of the festival says it has been a up and down journey the past 25 years to keep this music festival going but senior artistes have been always willing to perform.
The fest was held at various venues, mostly marriage halls in the city and has been on at the Nanganallur venue for three years.
