Ashtanayikas - Heroines in love

Senior dance guru Kalanidhi Narayanan, affectionately known as 'Maami' among the dancers, is considered to be the best abhinaya exponents of our times.

A DVD and a VCD titled Ashtanayikas - Heroines in Love - produced by Swathi Soft Solutions was released recently at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha.

Through a classroom session and demo, Kalanidhi focuses on Nayikabhava with an exposition on Ashtanayikas - the heroines categorised by the Natyashastras under eight different heads according to their emotional status.

The attributes of each nayika are analysed in detail by the guru who compares and contrasts Abhisarika with other nayikas to bring out the subtle differences between them.

The lively and informal student - teacher interaction is marked by enlightening digressions that cover different heroines, different contexts and a host of padams and javalis from the repertoire of well-known composers.

In this album, Kalanidhi Narayanan provides a few practical tips for teachers and also students at different levels of learning dance.

Swathi Soft Solutions, promoters say there is a wealth of information on how to approach the composition, understand its meaning and the mood it portrays before actually getting down to performance.

This product is a set of eight DVDs, and each DVD is dedicated to one Nayika. The concept and presentation is by dancer Priyadarshini Govind.

The dancers who have performed in the CDs are Shobana Balachandra, Jayanthi Subramaniam, Susheela Ulla, Bragha Bassel, Ramya, Roja Kannan and Indira Kadambi. This set is priced at Rs. 750.
