Dikshitar compositions; album of T. V. Ramprasadh

T. V. Ramprasadh says he has had a good 'season'.

Ten concerts over; two more to go. And though the body is tiring, he says the voice is holding. And he doesn't mind going to suburban Tambaram.

With advanced training in music from veterans R. R. Keshavamurthy, T. V. Gopalkrishnan, Dr. V. V. Srivatsa , . Rajam and P. S. Narayanaswamy, Ramprasadh has cut an album for Kosmic Music comprising of seven Dikshitar kritis.

On the album is Mysore V. Srikanth on the violin, Srimushanam Raja Rao on the mridangam and E. M. Subramaniam is on the ghatam.

The album features well known kritis like 'Kamalambam bhajare' in Kalyani and 'Rangapura vihara' in Brindavana Saranga, popularised by

M. S. Subbulakshmi, but also has rare kritis like Kaumaari in the raga Gaurimanohari (Gaurivelaavali as in Dikshitar school) and Kalavati in the raga Kalavati.

With senior musicians and musicologists Dr V. V. Srivatsa, P. S. Narayanaswamy and S. Rajam as resource persons, the seven classics in the album have been put together rather well.

Ramprasadh, who has annual teaching assignments in the USA, says he is thrilled with the quality of this CD.

The audio CD is priced at Rs. 125.

The album will be released on Dec. 31 at Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha at 10 am. This will be followed by a vocal concert by Ramprasadh and he promises to sing a few of the songs on the new album.

Music and mukha bhavam

Senior artiste Nirmala Ramachandran is trained both in dance and music.

With Pandanallur Chokkalingam Pillai as her dance guru and K. V. Narayanaswamy and T. Mukta as music gurus, no wonder Nirmala has a liking for padams and javalis.

She is performing exclusive padam concerts on Dec. 29 at Narada Gana Sabha at 9.30 and for the Indian Fine Arts at Balamandir German Hall on Dec. 30 at 10.30.

With a background in dance, her music concerts will be accompanied by demostration of appropriate mukha bhavams.

Nirmala was given the 'Nrithya Kala Sagaram' award at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival in April 2006
