New Year's eve: celebrate differently
If you are tired of all those midnight parties on New Year eve in clubs and hotels and if you are an art buff, here are a few places to check out on Dec. 31.
At Kalakshetra campus
Koothu Kalai Koodam will perform a koothu from 10pm till midnight. If you can spend the whole evening in the calmness of the campus, there are many more interesting events from 4pm. Rajappa of Adishakti, Puducherry will be presenting a puppetry show, followed by the screening of the docu-film on singer Sanjay Subramayan at 5 pm. Students of Kalakshetra will perform a dance drama 'Kurmavataram' at 6.30pm. During the break between 9 and 10pm, you can have your dinner.
The Kalakshetra managers have arranged for food stalls on the campus.
At The Music Academy
Carnatica.com, founded by musicians Shashikiran and Sowmya and The Music Academy jointly present 'Eastern Ethnic New Years’ Eve'.
There will be group singing at midnight, audio-visual presentations, select individual performances and surprise combo performances.
Senior musicians like T. N. Krishnan Umayalpuram Sivaraman, Vellore Ramabhadran, Madurai T.N. Seshagopalan, Trichur Ramachandran, Mannargudi Easwaran and Srimushnam Raja Rao have joined hands to celebrate the New Year in an artistic way.
Many young musicians will also take part in the event.
The programme starts at 10.30pm.
Traditional snacks - sundal and panagam - will be served at the New Year party'.

Showcasing young talent
The audience is thin at most afternoon concerts.
Is it discouraging for the young artistes? "No, the young artistes came out with a lot of ideas when we wanted to organise a thematic presentaion by them," says 'Mudra' Bhaskar.
Mudra is organising a two day thematic performances by talented young musicians on Dec. 30 and 31. Prarthana Rao, Ranjani Hebbar, K. Dharini, Erode Anantaraman, Priyanka Raman and Subhiksha Rangarajan performed today.
The concerts are held from 9am. Tomorrow's highlights at the youth fest are: concert by Bangalore based Amrutha Venkatesh and Bharat Sundar, a Ragam Tanam Pallavi by M. R. Subramanian, L. Athira's violin solo, one raga-one kriti by Rithwik Raja and Dikshitar's Rama vibhakthi kritis by Nadamuni Gayathri Bharat
The concerts are held at the Infosys Hall, RKM School campus, Habibullah Road, T. Nagar ( off North Usman Road)
