Thematic presentation of Thirupaavai
Dancer Anitha Guha is breaking away from the usual dance ballets. Her new production for this December season will not use theatrical sets but will rely on pure dance and effective lighting.
‘Koodiyirundhu Kulrindhelore Empaavaai’ is a thematic presentation of Andal's Thirupaavai.
Thirupaavai is often considered the quintessence of the Vedas. The story of ‘Andal’- one of the twelve ‘Azhwars’, who is believed to have married to Lord Ranganatha, is a monumental example of pure love, devotion, piety, dedication and complete surrender to God.
In this three part presentation, Anitha Guha has tried to explore the deeper implications of Thirupaavai, rather than its literal meaning. "The entire exposition is imbibed with a profound feeling of bhakthi,” says Anitha.
Anitha has worked with Dr. Ananntha Padmanabhachariar’s interpretation of Thirupaavai. Dr.Ananntha Padmanabhachariar, a Sanskrit scholar works for the religious magazine Sri NrisimhaPriya. Anitha recalls her staging of 'Thirupaavai' along with Dr.Anannthapadmanabhachariar’s ‘Upanyasam’ at T.T.D.Devasthanam in the Dec-2005 Marghazhi Festival. The warm reception to this production encouraged her to do repeat shows.
While the ragas of the verses are the original ones, to weave together different verses of the paasurams, Anitha and composer. P. R. Venkatasubramanium, have adopted the swaras and jathis that echo the meaning of the songs.
The production will be staged on Dec. 16, 17, 18 (in three parts) for Sri Krishna Gana Sabha. The repeat shows of this production will be for Karthik Fine Arts at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan Hall, Mylapore on Dec. 20, for Indian Fine Arts Society at Balamandir German Hall, T. Nagar on Dec. 24, for Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha at Vani Mahal, T.
