Anusha Kedhar of Arpana Dance Company awarded fellowship.

Anusha Kedhar of the Arpana Dance Company, Irvine, CA is one of eighteen artistes selected for the renowned and prestigious Asia Pacific Performance Exchange fellowship (APPEX) at UCLA.

APPEX is an international residency program that promotes understanding and appreciation across cultures, and fosters new ways to experiment, collaborate and interpret artistic _expression between American and Asian artists. Cultural, historical, religious and aesthetic influences converge when 18 artistes work together for the first time. The vision and virtuosity of the artists and the benefits of international exchange and collaboration will be on display at this unique and historic ‘coming together’ of international artistes. Recipient of a Fulbright scholarship to research dance in India, Kedhar will also be pursuing her PhD program in dance at UCRiverside this fall.

Kedhar is from Irvine, CA, where she has trained in Bharata Natyam since 1982 under the direction of her teacher Ramya Harishankar of the Arpana School of Dance. She has also attended workshops conducted by Kalanidhi Narayanan (Abhinaya) and Isabel Fernandez (Flamenco).

She had the unusual opportunity of working with Pandit Birju Maharaj on a piece in the Kathak style for Harishankar’s latest experimental work Ganga …Life as a river

Since 1990, Kedhar has toured the US, Europe and India as one of the principal dancers of the Arpana Dance Company and also taught at the Southern California based Arpana School of Dance. More recently, she has been working as a choreographer and dancer for Angika, known as one of UK’s most dynamic and imaginative British Indian dance companies.

At APPEX individual works by participating artistes will be showcased on Wednesday, July 19 and Friday, July 21. The collaborative works are to be presented on Wednesday, August 9 and Friday, August 11. All events will start at 7:00 pm and will be held at Glorya Kaufman Dance Theater UCLA, 120 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles. This is a project of the UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance.
