Carnatica Brothers treat rasikas / Minneapolis
By Bharathi Aravamudan / Minneapolis

The Carnatica Brothers - Sashikiran and Ganesh performed at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community Center, Minneapolis on 3 June, 2005. This was held on the occasion of celebrating the 25th anniversary of Indian Music Society of Minnesota (IMSOM).

The concert was a little different in that, in addition to their usual violin and mridangam accompaniment, it also included the veena and the tabla by local artistes Niramala Rajasekar and A. Pavan.

After the ata tala varnam in Khamboji, and Jagadanandakaraka in Natta, the brothers gave a detailed rendition of Ekambresha nayike (Karnataka Shuddha Saveri) and Sevikka vendum aiyya (Andolika).

These were followed by Shankarineeve (Begada), Ennai nee (Amritavarshini), and Kamakshi (Swarajati in Bhairavi). The later part of the concert included a few Hindustani-style pieces, in ragas like Darbari kanada, Behag, Sindhubhairavi and Hamsadhwani.

The recital extended a little over time due to multiple requests for songs like Bho Shambho (Revati), Tillana (Shivaranjani) and Chinnanchiru kiliye (Ragamalika).

Nagai Shriram (violin) and Murugabhoopati (mridangam) enhanced the concert.
