| Kshetra Academy held its annual 'Nrithyotsav' concert on 7 June, 2003, at the Securities Commission auditorium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The academy run by Apsara Ram Gopal, a Kalakshetra alumnus, conducts the Nrithyotsav concert annually to provide her students an opportunity to perform on stage. This year, the fest commemorated the birth centenary of Rukmini Devi Arundale. The concert was called 'Anjali', a tribute by Kshetra Academy to this great personality.
It was a packed audience that witnessed the concert that evening. The programme began at 7. 30 in the evening with a 15 minute slide show that took the audience from the beginning of Rukmini Devi's life, her association with Dr. Annie Besant and Dr. Arundale, her meeting the prima ballerina Anna Pavlova, her dance lessons under Mylapore Gowri-ammal and Guru Meenakshisundaram Pillai, her first public performance, her starting the Kalakshetra, her contributions to dance, music, education, arts and crafts, animal welfare and the environment. It was an eye opener for all who gathered that evening.
The concert began with the Kalakshetra prayer recited by the orchestra. The orchestra for the evening comprised Apsara on the natuvangam, Ram Gopal on the mridangam, Nandakumar and Vijaykumar on vocal and Padmini Shanmugam on the veena. A 'Margam' drawn solely from the Kalakshetra repertoire comprising the Alaripu, Jathiswaram, Shabdam, Varnam, Padam, Kirthanam and Thillana-Mangalam was presented that evening. Added to this were two items by the juniors, the 'Pratama Abhyasa' an item that strung together the basic steps of Bharathanatyam, and the Kolattam. The concert ended at 9.30 pm, as scheduled.
The students surprised their teacher, Apsara, by presenting her with a beautifully painted portrait of hers. According to Apsara the concert's success was everyone's - the splendid effort by the students, the cooperation and support by the parents and an appreciative audience. She received messages of blessings from her alma mater, Kalakshetra, her teachers S. Sarada (Periya- Sarada teacher) of Kalakshetra, Sarada Hoffman, V.P. Dhananjayan and Shanta Dhananjayan, Ludwig Pesch and her classmates like Tripti Bhupen and others. |
