Here is some good news for all those who may have wondered if the annual conference and concerts of The Music Academy would ever be hosted in December.
The festival will take place.
Legal cases had brought events to a standstill at the famed Academy. Since the very legality of the managing team was questioned in court, nothing major could be undertaken.
Recently, a Division Bench of the Madras High Court held that the executive committee of The Music Academy could hold its annual music festival in December this year. And the committee can also act till February 3, 2004.
Interim orders have been passed on the petitions and appeals from different sections of the Academy's management. Justice V.S. Sirpurkar and Justice P.D. Dinakaran said, "We are of the considered opinion that it may not be proper at this stage to interfere in the management of the said festival at least and it may not be proper not to allow them to hold the said festival. We hasten to add that this does not mean that we have in any manner recognised the legality of that committee so far..."
The Bench added that the annual music festival of The Academy was part of the cultural life of Chennai and offered performance opportunities for many artistes. It was also said that the executive committee should hold the meetings after giving notice to the Inspector-General of Registration. Complete transparency in the committee's transactions should also be maintained.
And now, the final hearing has been posted for the second week of February 2004.
