Krishna Gana Sabha celebrates golden jubilee

Sri Krishna Gana Sabha celebrates its golden jubilee this year. And the sabha's December Season festival, 'Swarna Jayanthi Mahotsav' is dedicated to the legendary dancer Rukmini Devi Arundale, whose birth centenary is being celebrated this year.

The Swarna Jayanthi Mahotsav will be inaugurated by Swami Dayananda Saraswathi. Well known dancer Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam presides and unveils the portrait of Rukmini Devi.

The 'Nrithya Choodamani' award, considered a prestigious honour in the dance circles, will be presented to the dance duo M.V. Narasimhachari and his dancer-wife Vasanthalakshmi Narasimhachari. The 'Acharya Choodamani' award will be presented to Prof. N.S. Jayalakshmi (of Kalakshetra fame). Senior dancers Lakshmi Viswanathan, Prof. C.V. Chandrasekhar, V.P. Dhananjayan and Leela Samson will offer their felicitations. The inaugural dance recital features Uma Ramesh. The Natya Kala conference, convened by dancer Leela Samson, will be held from December 14 to 20, daily at 9.30 am.

The festival features the top artistes. Dance concerts feature Padma Subrahmanyam in 'Bhagavad Gita', Narasimhacharis, Kalakshetra artistes in 'Andal Charithram' a dance drama, Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy and her disciples along with students of the Colgate University in 'The Tale of Puhar', Chitra Visweswaran, Kathak by Birju Maharaj, Anita Ratnam in 'Utpala', Juaglbandhi featuring Alarmel Valli (Bharatanatyam) and Madhavi Mudgal (Odissi), Malavika Sarukkai, Leela Samson, Prof. C.V. Chandrasekhar in 'Bhramara Geet' a dance drama, Dhananjayans in 'Sangeetha Maruthi', Mohiniattam by Bharathi Shivaji, Geetha Chandran and Shobana among others.

Some of the top musicians featured are O.S. Arun, Mandolin Shrinivas, M.S. Gopalakrishnan, Aruna Sayeeram, Unnikrishnan, T.V. Shankaranarayanan, T.N. seshagopalan, M.S. Sheela, Treichur Ramachandran, O.S. Thyagarajan, Sudha Raghunathan, Bombay Jayashree, Nithyashree, Hyderabad Brothers, Hindusthani music by Pt. Jasraj and Bombay Sisters among others.

On January 4, 2003, a day-long programme of lecture demonstrations will be dedicated to violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman. The musician will also be presented the 'Swarna Jayanthi Mahotsava Special Award'.

Season tickets are priced at Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000, Rs. 2000 and Rs. 1000. Daily tickets at Rs. 500, Rs. 300, Rs.200 and Rs. 100.
