Carnatic vocalist T. V. Sankaranarayanan has been chosen to receive the Sangita Kalanidhi award from The Music Academy this year.
At his residence, the senior musician was besieged with telephone calls this morning. He told KutcheriBuzz, "I am greatly honoured."
This is a year of awards for him, he said, starting with the Padma Bhushan earlier this year. Kapali Fine Arts will honour him with the title 'Sangeetha Kala Jothi' during the season. The Maharaja Viswanatha Iyer Trust honours him in November, with the Maharaja Viswanatha Iyer award. The Rama Bhaktha Jana Samaj of K. K. Nagar gives him the title 'Sangeetha Mamani', and the Sri Ranjani Sabha will honour him with the title Sri Ranjini Kala Sagara.
The Music Academy also announced the names of other awardees for this year.
Violinist Parur M. S. Anantharaman and dance guru Adyar K. Lakshmanan will receive the title Sangita Kala Acharya; Guruvayur Dorai and Semponnaarkoil Vaidyanathan will receive the T. T. K. Award; Madurai T. Srinivasan will receive the Vaggeyakara Award and violinist A. Kanyakumari will be honoured with the Papa Venkataramaiah Award.
The awards will be presented at the Sadas of The Academy on January 1, 2004.
