They call it the humble instrument - the claypot. Or the ghatam!
But the ghatam made famous by 'Vikku' Vinayakram is going places with S. Karthick. Now, his percussion group called HeartBeat seems to be getting invitations from the far corners of the globe. One recent performance was held in Australia, the proceeds of which went to an orphanage.
The HeartBeat ensemble, which has been jamming together for a few years now, is a strong lineup and highly talented too. It has Embar S. Kannan on the silent violin , U.P. Raju on the mandolin , Poongulam S.Subramanian on the mridangam, Papanasam Sethuraman on the kanjira and N. Sundar on the morsing and tabla. Karthick plays the ghatam, the konnakol amd sings in between.
Karthick performs in settings as varied as traditional Indian classical music, jazz, rock, blues, flamenco and fusion. Karthick also specialises in verbal percussion (konnakol).
As a percussionist, he also works with the Indian film industry, with Ilayaraja, A.R.Rahman, Vidyasagar and others.
These experiences, motivated him to start his own percussion oriented musical ensemble This year, Karthick was chosen for the Kalki Memorial Award given to him in September.
