Gowri Rajagopal's 1000th Harikatha concert

Mylapore based Harikatha artiste, Gowri Rajagopal gave her 1000th Harikatha performance recently at Sri Ramakrishna Mutt, Mylapore, Chennai.

This was held on the occasion of the 150th guru pooja of Mother Saradadevi. Gowri's Harikatha themed on Saradadevi was witnessed by about 150 leprosy patients.

Ramakrishna Mutt which is involved in the rehabilitation of leprosy patients over the past several years, had organised this programme specially for them.

Gowri Rajagopal, who was initiated into the art of Harikatha by her parents when she was eight years old, later trained under C. Banni Bai and Mannargudi Sambasiva Bhagavathar. She presented her first concert in 1957. Ever since, she has performed at some of the major sabhas, temples, schools, colleges, orphanages, mental hospitals, Vellore prison for women and at a Narikuravas colony too.

A recipient of the 'Kalaimamani' award, Gowri says that Harikatha is one of the best mediums to communicate social messages, spread Indian culture and inculcate good habits among children.
