A grand finale of the birth centenary celebrations of Rukmini Devi Arundale will be held in New Delhi, India, from February 29 onwards.
The ten-day long celebrations will be held at the Kamani Auditorium.
On Feb.29, artistes from Kalakshetra, the arts campus founded by Arundale in south Chennai, will stage 'Kannappar Kuravanji'. The chief guest for the evening is the President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. The Minister for Tourism and Culture, Jagmohan will also paarticipate.
Carnatic vocalist Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna will present a vocal concert on March 1. On March 2, the dance drama 'Rukmini Kalyanam' will be staged. And on this day, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Minister of Human Resource Development, Science and Technology will preside.
On March 3, 'Mahapattabhishekam' will be staged. The Deputy Prime Minister, L. K. Advani is expected to be present at this event.
He will also unveil a portrait of Rukmini Devi.
On March 4, dance duo Raja and Radha Reddy present a Kuchipudi recital and on March 5, Kadri Gopalnath presents a saxophone recital.
An exhibition of rare pictures of the dancer-choreographer-guru, curated by Sunil Kothari will be held from March 1 to 8, at Lalit Kala Gallery, Rabindra Bhavan, Ferozeshah Road, New Delhi.
Daily screenings of documentary films on Rukmini Devi and Kalakshetra will also be on at the gallery.
A photo biography of Rukmini Devi will also be released on the occasion.
The birth centenary of Rukmini Devi is also being celebrated by various arts organisations in Chennai, Mumbai and the U.S., this week.
