SICA's fest draws rasikas
By Dr. A. Ramayya Mulukutla / Hyderabad

The South Indian Cultural Association (SICA) of Hyderabad celebrated its 44th annual fest at Ravindra Bharati, Hyderabad recently. It kicked off with a vintage performance by carnatic vocalist Dr. Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna. Whether they were compositions of Thyagaraja, Bharathiyar or his own, his concert left the rasikas, who packed Ravindra Bharati to 'standing-room-only' capacity, asking for more.

This was followed by a full scale Kutcheri, by T. N. Seeshagopalan. It was a 3-hour-plus programme in classical style which included RTP. This is rare nowadays when performances are restricted to 2 hours or less due to time constraints. Nagai Sriram on violin, Vellore Ramabhadran on mridangam and S. Govindarajan on ghatam provided the accompaniment.

On the third day, it was Prof. T.N. Krishnan and his children Viji Krishnan and Sriram who gave a violin concert. The intricacies they wove into their performance, the way they merged into one another's rendition of a particular krithi and their tempo needs mention. It was easily one of the best of violin trios that rasikas of this city have experienced.

It was T. V. Shankaranaryanan's turn to entertain the audience, the next day. He too, like Balamuralikrishna, chose compostions of several composers. This was the third performance of the maestro in the past two months in the 'Twin Cities'.

Then it was Kadri Gopalnath who played on the saxophne. However, this happened to fall in the middle of the week. In addition, after excellent performances in the last four days, rasikas seemed to have had their fill. The attendance was poor.

The fest concluded with a Bharatanatyam performance by well known dancer Malavika Sarukkai.

The rasikas of the twin cities were truly lucky in that the various sponsors brought such top artistes for this year's annual fest of SICA. The organizers, especially SICA's President Chakravarthy and Secretary Chakrapani need to be congratulated. It can only be hoped that other sponsors will come forward and support more cultural activities in the twin cities in the years to come.
