On Tamil New Year's day last week, the South India Cultural Association (SICA) presented a Bharatanatyam dance drama, 'Sita Kalyanam'. Choreographed and directed by guru V. S. Ramaswamy and performed by his disciples from Srirama Nataka Niketan, the dance drama was presented to rasikas in the packed Ravindra Bharati auditorium.
Indrani Sharma played Rama and Geetha Ganesan adorned the role of Sita. The court dancers were Varshini, Amrutha, Shristi and Sindhuja Prema Ramamurthy provided the vocal. Props and lighting were done by Surabhi Purnachandrasekhar.
The previous day, SICA introduced an upcoming vocalist from Karnataka, A. Vasudhaa, who is a disciple of P.S.Narayanaswamy. A master's degree holder in Music from Mysore University, Vasudhaa rendered a Thodi Varnam and kritis in Janaranjani, Reetigowla and Kambhoji, to name a few.
Meanwhile, Kalasagaram of Secuderabad organised a vocal concert by R. Suryaprakash, a disciple of T. V. Shankaranarayanan. His renditions featured ragas like Hamsadhwani, Kalyani and Hindolam. Because of the 40 degree temperature and the venue not being air-conditioned the attendence at this concert was very poor.
