It was really an overwhelming experience!
The venue - Winston Churchill Hall, Hillingdon, UK
The occasion - Carnatic vocal concert for the benefit of Tamil Orphan Trust.
The artiste - Sudha Raghunathan
The hall was packed to the full, expectedly. Not a seat was vacant. Carnatic music lovers of all hues were present there - Parvati, Peter, Mahendran and Mario!
Sudha Raghunathan began the concert with the varnam Viriboni in Bairavi ragam. The very beginning set the mood for what was going to follow. Majority in the audience had come expecting a very traditional presentation. They sat still throughout the concert with such rapt attention. There was pin-drop silence in the auditorium. Sudha continued with Pramamyaham of Mysore Vasudevachar, Kavava of Papanasam Sivan and Janani Ninnuvina of Subbaraya Sastri all preceded by a short raga alapana.
Then it was an elaborate Parvati Nayakaney in Shanmugapriya with niraval and swara prasthara. Be it traditional ragam thanam pallavi or our very popular 'kaatriniley varum geetham' the audience enjoyed the concert. The accompanying artistes were Palladam Ravi on the mridangam, Embar Kannan on the violin and R. Raman on morsing. The team as a whole was seen clearly enjoying every composition and it was no surprise hence that the audience too did.
Post interval, Sudha rendered mostly familiar songs like Kanda naal mudalaai, Sri Chakra, Chinnanchiru kiliye, a Sai bhajan and a Thillana. 'Vazhiya senthamizh' provided a grand finale to the performance. 'When is she coming back?' was pretty much the refrain in everyone's lip as the concert concluded to a long ovation.
