Music fest in Thanjavur

After the Thyagaraja Aradhana at Thiruvayar and the Natyanjali festivals at the Brihadeeswara temple and Kumbakonam, Thanjavur in South India will again have music in the air this month.

Sri Thyagabrahma Sabha, Thanjavur hosts a music festival from June 11 to 20, 2004 at Sri Besant Lodge, Thanjavur.

The festival organisers say that Sri Thyagabrahma Sabha, one of the oldest sabhas in Thanjavur was founded in 1948 and functioned actively till the late 1970's. It has been revived last year and the sabha has been hosting kutcheris every month since then.

Sri Besant Lodge, the venue for the annual ten-day fest is located within the Theosophical Society's campus in Thanjavur. The fest is to be held on an open air stage and the campus can accomodate about 1000 rasikas. It features top artistes and has a good mix of vocal and instrumental music.

Nalli Kuppuswami Chettiar inaugurates the fest, K. Phanindra Reddy, Director, South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur will release a souvenir and A. Natarajan, former Director Doordarshan, Chennai delivers a special address.

The fest features Nagaswaram by Babu and Kumar and Thavil by R. Govindarajan, vocal concerts by M.S. Sheela, Sanjay Subramaniam, Kathak by T.Pooja and T. Prarthana, Veena by D. Balakrishnan, flute by N. Ramani, Hindusthani Ghazals by Sowmya Madanagopal and S.V.S. Kumar, Tirumurai Isai by N. Swaminathan, Harikatha on 'Sri Thyagaraja' by T.N. Seshagopalan and violin duet by M.S. Gopalakrishnan and G. Narmada.
