Senior Carnatic vocalist M. Balamurali Krishna, the Cultural Advisor to the Government of AP conducted a camp (Sangeetha Sikshana Sibiram) and gave Carnatic music lessons from 7 to 13 June, 2004 in Hyderabad.
Conducted by Thagaraya Gana Sabha in association with SS Music Academy and Raghava Vardhini, at their mini auditorium, it was attended by some 75 students ranging in the age group of 10 to 60 plus. The fee for the camp was Rs. 850/-.
During the week-long camp, Dr. Balamurali taught several of his own compositions in some rare ragas he created, as well as those of Thyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Jayadeva.
The ragas included Vallabhi, Gurupriya as well as Hamsadhwani and Vasantha. Balamuralikrishna also shared some of his experiences in his music career. One of them was the inspiration he got when visiting the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, that led to his composing the Pallavi, Anupallavi and Charanam on Brihadeeswara during the three Pradakshinams he made round the temple.
A ten year-old participant said, "He sings so different from my teacher". "We learnt about Gamaka, but I wish he touched on Raagalapana and Swarakalpana" says a budding flautist.
