By Dr. A Ramayya Mulukutla / Hyderabad

Students and alumni of the Thyagaraja College of Music and Dance paid homage to their guru Kolumunuru Sudershana Charya at an event this week in Hyderabad.

Kolumunuru Sudershana Charya was a professor at Thyagaraja (Government) College of Music and Dance, in Hyderabad. Born in 1936 and brought up in Bhuvanagiri, Nalgonda District of Andhra Pradesh, he became a mridangist under the tutelage of maestro Kolanka Venkataraju. He founded the Kolanka Sampradaya Mridanga Mahavidyalayam and trained many of today's mridangam players in A.P. for free. He pioneered playing of morsing at kutcheris in A.P. Professor Sudersana Charya passed away in 1992.

The 45-minute concert, 'Sudarsanamala' featured a Ragamalika rendition of Sunadavinodini, Darbarikanada, Sahana, Nalinikantha, Manavathi and Lathangi. The rare feature of the program was that percussion instruments mridangam, ghatam, tabla and morsing took the center stage while violins, veenas, flute and kanjeera played 'second fiddle'.

Mridangist S. Ramana organised the event. The other artistes were Om Prakash (mridangam), R. Sudhakar and D.V.L. Sastry (veena), B. Pavan Singh and Ramesh (violin), Rammohan (flute), Kaliprasad (ghatam), Prakash (kanjeera) and R. Srikanth (tabla and morsing). The college campus was packed with alumni including Hyderabad Sisters, students and other musicians of the Twin Cities.
