On Republic Day, 2005, the Govt. of India announced the names of personalities who will receive the prestigious 'Padma' awards this year. Among the 96 personalities representing various fields from all over India, chosen for the national honour, two artistes from the South Indian classical music and dance field will be honoured. Chennai based violin maestro Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan and Delhi based senior dancer Komala Varadan. They receive the 'Padma Shri'.
On January 26, when the names of awardees were announced, Vaidhyanathan was greeted by several of his fans and other artistes at Narada Gana Sabha's mini hall in Chennai. The maestro who heads the Ragha Research Centre, presented a lec-dem on raga Kambodhi that morning. Playback singer P.B. the popular violinist and presented it to him. And its celebration time for the violinist now. His rasikas have planned an event on February 9, to mark the 60 years of his music career. Performing from the age of nine, Kunnakudi has accompanied stalwarts like Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar and Chittoor Subramania Pillai among several others.
He sore to popularity with his entry into films. One of the first films that he scored music for, was 'Va Raja Va'. He has composed music for about 54 films and also for several dance-dramas, choreographed by dance guru Krishnakumari Narendran. And one of the ways he spices up his own concerts is by including film hits. As for this weekend, Kunnakudi who is one of the secretaries of the Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha, is busy co-ordinating the Thyagaraja Aradhana in Thiruvaiyaru. Bharatanatyam dancer Komala Varadan heads Kalaikoodam, Komala Varadan Insitute of Art, New Delhi, and her dance choreography of Shri Ram Charit Manas has been published as a picture book with a sequence of photographs of the entire performance titled 'Bharata Natyam - Expanding Horizons'.
