Like most sabhas, Nadasurabhi in Bangalore too wishes to encourage young talent in Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam.
The normal procedure is to conduct competitions for youngsters and give away prizes to the winners. These are normally based on just one song. However these youngsters do not get a chance to move forward and perform in a sabha concert, unless they prove themselves to be exceptionally good. In many cases they drop off along the way for want of opportunities to grow further.
Nadasurabhi, a few years ago addressed this lacuna, by deciding to provide a kacheri opportunity in a formal sabha platform to these talented youngsters, although for a shorter duration of 100minutes instead of the traditional 21/2 hours of a regular concert.
Every year in February, the sabha have been showcasing five very talented artists during the “Youth Festival” spread over three days.
On identifying high caliber, they have also given these youths the stage for a full concert.
This year the Nadasurabhi Youth Festival was conducted on the 19th, 20th and 21st of Februray.
Four vocal concerts, one violin concert and a Bharatanatyam programme were featured during this period. The concluding grand event was the Thyagaraja and Purandaradasa Aradhana with leading musicians from Bangalore, Tamil Nadu and Kerala rendering of the Pancharatna Kritis.
The concerts were held at Indian Heritage Academy Hall, Koramangala 6th Block.
