The Board of Kalakshetra wants Leela Samson back as the director of this world renowned institution in Thiruvanmiyur.
The Board members met on Friday to discuss Leela's resignation and also decided to write to the Ministry of Culture, New Delhi about its decision.
He extraordinary situation had arisen after the decorated guru and dancer who has been at the helm of Kalakshetra since 2006 put in her papers after a Board meeting in mid-April where it was pointed out that she could not continue since she was past the age of 60 and that a CAG audit report had shown many instances where contracts and works had not complied with the rules.
A former Kalakshetra staff has also legally challenged some faculty appointments and others have questioned her continuance after attaining the age of 60.
Leela's resignation shocked many artistes and well wishers. Many campaigns were launched to ask the ministry to ask her to continue as Director.
Some Board members also expressed their indignation.
Leela herself has said that she will be glad to come back but she will require the right people appointed here to handle administrative and related areas since all the responsibilities are now thrust on the Director.
Clearly, structural changes are also the need here and the ministry will have to look into these issues.
Also, this issue has also highlghted the machinations of a group of artistes and others who continue to be actively challenging Leela's directorship and wash dirty linen.
