In her time, she was a stalwart of an era of a different time. A Bharatanatyam guru who lived in what may well be two eras of the dance form. One that has little evidence in today's dance. The other, a form that has come to stay.
K J Sarasa was a guru who shared a dance lineage that was left to a few gurus to carry forward. And when she left the world, like many others it was left to her senior students to keep her memory.
Chennai-based dancer Shanmugha Sundaram has, in his own way not only tried to keep his late guru's dance academy alive but also made efforts to keep her memory alive.
This year, Sundaram is putting together a dance festival to celebrate Sarasa - at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai on Feb.17 to 19. Besides recitals by students of Shanmugha Sundaram and senior dancer A Lakshmanaswamy, also a K J Sarasa sishya, there will be solo recitals by artistes who were the late guru's students and a recital by the famed Dhananjayans.
