The 173rd edition of saint Thyagaraja aradhana that is held in Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu is to be be held from January 11 to 15.
The aradhana is a form of musical tribute to one of the biggest composers of Caranatic music and on the day that he attained samadhi, hundreds of musicians sing and perform in one voice his famed pancharatna kritis in front of the shrine where the saint composer's samadhi is said to be located, on the banks of the Cauvery river.
From January 11 onwards, the team which manages this aradhana festival, now known the world over and a destination for musicians and rasikas alike, hosts short concerts on stages facing the shrine and under a massive mantap, giving junior, middle-level and senior artistes the opportunity to pay a musical tribute. Some 25/ 30 concerts are held through the day, with the well-known artistes on stage post 7 p.m.
Artistes sing only the songs composed by Thyagaraja. Concerts start as early as 5 a.m., with nagaswaram music and end by midnight.
The event is open to all and during this fest, Thiruvaiyaru comes alive. Thanjavur is some 15 kms away.
