Aalaap in collaboration with Spirit of the Earth presents Odissi on High, a dance production on May 14, 2019, at the Narada Gana Sabha at 6.30 pm. The production is by the Sutra Foundation (Malaysia) and Rudraksha Foundation (Odisha).
Odissi on High premiered last year features dazzling performance of Sutra (Kuala Lumpur), together with the amazing male dancers of Rukdrakshya Foundation (Bhubaneswar). The concept of Odissi on High effectively describes the remarkable evolution of virtuosity of the two pioneer gurus of Odissi – the late Gurus, Kelucharan Mahapatra and Debaprasad Das. The approaches and evolution of these two veteran gurus have been developed and enhanced by their respective star disciples, Guru Bichitrananda and Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, respectively.
Datuk Ramli Ibrahim has been the sutradhara (artistic director) in this production, simultaneously, co-artistically directing the production with Guru Bichitrananda Swain of Rudrakshya Foundation.
The production features some of the best male dancers of Odisha that can now be found in Rudrakshya Foundation and have been groomed by Guru Bichitrananda. Not only are Rudrakshya dancers amazing, Bichitrananda’s new Odissi compositions have explored new vocabulary within the aesthetic bounds of Odissi. His new works represent the fresh trend in Odissi – dynamic, exciting and technically challenging. He is the next wave of exciting choreographers who has emerged from Odisha and whose works resonate with the youth today.
